What is Indigestion?

You’ve probably heard the term, but you might not know exactly what it means…..

Indigestion is often used as a catch-all phrase, such as “tummy ache” is used to describe a wide variety of symptoms. Therefore people may call a uncomfortable symptom they are having digesting their food indigestion, however this symptom may be labelled by another person using a completely different term or label. So what is indigestion?

Indigestion usually refers to any sort of discomfort in your upper abdomen. Below we discuss some of the common symptoms of indigestion.

Symptoms of Indigestion?

Symptoms of indigestion can include stomach pain, heartburn, acid reflex, bloating, gas and nausea. Indigestion usually occurs higher in the body, where the stomach is located, well above the intestines. These symptoms may be a dull aching pain, however other times it can be sharp enough to take your breath away. Surprisingly, a very severe boat of indigestion can be mistaken for a heart attack.

If you feel full right after a meal, or if you are halfway through your meal and find you really can’t eat anymore, that uncomfortable feeling of fullness is likely indigestion. If you suffer from severe abdominal pain in the upper part of your body, especially shortly after a meal, or if you feel a burning sensation between your breastbone and your navel, you might be dealing with indigestion. Feeling faint after eating, or possibly feeling the need to vomit after eating is another symptom of indigestion called nausea.

Keep in mind that even though you might experience heartburn along with indigestion, they are not the same thing. Heartburn often occurs higher up in your body and can radiate from your chest to your back. You might also feel the pain of heartburn in your neck and throat.
